SCHOLARSHIP

Clinical scholarship grounded in musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine, and real-world primary care.

Dr. Gonzalez’s scholarship centers on clinically actionable questions at the intersection of family medicine, musculoskeletal care, and sports medicine. His recent work includes a PROSPERO-registered systematic review and meta-analysis on sarcopenia screening in adults ages 40–60, a disparity-focused abdominal aortic aneurysm screening study supporting point-of-care ultrasound integration in underserved primary care, and selected orthopaedic and sports medicine presentations that reflect a broader commitment to practical, translational research.

Current Research

Current work includes a PROSPERO-registered systematic review and meta-analysis on home- and office-based screening for early sarcopenia in middle-aged adults. Dr. Gonzalez initiated the project, designed the research question and protocol, co-developed the search strategy with research librarians, coordinated a five-member team, and continues to lead screening and extraction planning under sports medicine faculty oversight.

He also led a disparity-focused study examining abdominal aortic aneurysm screening in an underserved primary care population, using statistical analysis to evaluate screening gaps and to support point-of-care ultrasound as a potential solution in patients at high risk of remaining unscreened. Findings were presented at the Rush Department of Family and Preventive Medicine Research Forum, where the project received a poster award for exemplary scientific and methodological rigor, and manuscript preparation is ongoing.

Selected scholarly work includes two peer-reviewed orthopedic publications in The Journal of Arthroplasty, a case-study poster presented at the 2025 AMSSM Annual Conference titled Winging It: Scapular Dyskinesia in a Muay Thai Athlete, and a research poster on abdominal aortic aneurysm screening disparities presented at Rush. His recent work reflects a progression from outcomes research toward clinically translational sports medicine and primary care investigation.

Research Direction

Dr. Gonzalez is most interested in research that improves decision-making in real clinical settings: earlier detection of underrecognized disease, better use of point-of-care ultrasound, thoughtful integration of emerging technologies, and sports medicine questions that preserve function, performance, and trust. This includes current and future work in musculoskeletal screening, outpatient diagnostic precision, and data-informed approaches that remain grounded in patient context.
